Help with a magnetically powered flashlight?
I'm making a project for school.. a magnetically powered flashlight. My group and I intend to create a coil of wires and wrap it around a tubing with a magnet inside that will employ Faraday's Law and create an electric charge when shaken. This charge will be sent to a capacitor, which will then travel to an LED via a switch that can be opened or closed to complete the circuit. I just had a few questions about the design and how itmay be improved.
Is there some sort of material (ferromagnetic, for example) that we can use for the tube that will increase the charge produced?
What about the coil of wire, magnet, and capacitor? How many microfarads are we looking at for a capacitor that will keep the LED lit for a few minutes, and what about strength of magnet and type of wire?
Thanks for any advice, we want to make it as effective as possible using relatively cheap/homemade materials.
The key component here is the ultracapacitor.
The 'ultracap', or more correctly, the electrochemical double-layer capacitor (EDLC) is available in reasonable sizes for a reasonable price to meet your requirements.
A quick check of Digikey.com shows 5V, 3 Farad ultracaps in stock for $14.46 (USD).
Depending on the final design, you may want to apply some over-voltage protection in the form of a zener diode for the LED and/or EDLC.
The charging coil should be wound on a thin insulator, such as a plastic tube, and be sure to apply a full-wave bridge rectifier between the coil and EDLC, so that it charges the EDLC on both forward and backward passes of the magnet, and so the EDLC doesn't discharge into the coil. Otherwise, you would discharge the capacitor immediately, and/or damage it by applying reverse polarity.
While you could use equations to calculate the output voltage and current for a given coil configuration, magnet strength, etc. I would suggest starting with about 1000 turns of wire in the range of 36 - 28 AWG. It is difficult to manually work with wire smaller than 36 gauge. If the 36 breaks too much for you, try 32 or 28.
You don't need much current carrying capability in the wire, so don't worry about the coil overheating during charging. However, if a charged cap gets short-circuited by this wire, it will become a fuse!
Above all, start with a reference design, like the shaker flashlights already available for $10 - $20 in retail stores. Take one apart and do a little reverse-engineering. This is a good way to learn.
