Bright Lumen
lumens, are 110 Lumens real bright?

im thinking about buying a good flashlight, surefire has one that puts out 110 lumens, is that real bright? what are lumens?

To accurately answer this question, the first thing to understand is that Lumen's is a relative measurement. It is directly related to the frequency of the light or the color of the light. Lumen's measure the flux of a light being produced by a light source or received by a surface.

Most commonly we use watts as a relationship for brightness of a light. This assumes that the frequency is 60 Hz, what your local power company produces. Watts measure the amount of power used. Power = Current (watts) X Voltage.

By definition, at the peak sensitivity of the eye (green color or 555nm wavelength) 1 Watt equals 680 lumen's.

So, with all that said. 110 Lumen's is probably not that bright. A headlamp on a vehicle is 55 Watts. So 55 watts would be roughly 37,400 Lumen's.

Just for reference, one footcandle is one lumen per square foot or (X Lumen's times 12) to convert it to footcandles. The average backup light bulb in a vehicle is 37 candle power or about 0.6 watts.

Hope that answers your question.
